60th Anniversary of El Sermon Eficaz

As I personally reflect on some family history, I would like to share something that continues to bear fruit in Hispanic circles.

In January of this year, I was approached by a Baptist pastor in Monterrey, Mexico, about an idea he had been developing with some of his colleagues. October 23 marks the 60th anniversary of my father’s penning what has been considered in Baptist Latin American circles as one of the most significant books on sermon preparation written in Spanish, El Sermón Eficáz (The Effective Sermon). The pastor wanted to celebrate the occasion by organizing a two-and-one-half-day Congress on preaching to commemorate this milestone.

Since January, the event has taken on a life of its own. The Mexican Baptist Convention, both Mexican Baptist Convention seminaries, the Latin American Union of Baptists (UBLA, in Spanish), Editorial Mundo Hispano (the Baptist Spanish Publishing House in El Paso that published this book), and the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention have now joined together to sponsor the event.

The Baptist Spanish Publishing House has printed a special anniversary edition of El Sermón Eficáz.  When I shared a copy of this edition with each of our Hispanic pastors in the Association, they all were aware of its existence and several owned a previous version.

I will be going to Monterrey to participate in this event. I look forward to hearing some excellent sermons, participating in break-out sessions, and spending time with some who have found my father’s book helpful to their ministry. Maybe I will find some called by God to partner with DBA to start new Hispanic churches here!
