And he (Jesus) said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.”
Jesus said this to his disciples after the 12 had returned from their first two-by-two mission trip. The disciples, according to verse 13, “had cast out demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.” These young leaders were obviously excited to share with Jesus their successes.
Jesus knew that while these followers were on a spiritual high, the time needed to be spent resting. He understood the need for each person to take time out to recharge.
The word for “rest” found in verse 31 can also be translated as “being in a state of isolation.” Jesus wanted to direct the 12 to a place of solitude where they could be refreshed.
If Jesus offered this challenge 2000 years ago for his followers, the question becomes, “Is there still a need for it today?” In 2005, Scott McConnell, LifeWay’s Research Vice President, wrote, “Pastoring is a brutal job.” He then cited a survey of ministers that LifeWay had conducted that year which offered the following results:
It is obvious from this information that Jesus’ encouragement would still be valid today. To help address these stats, the DBA Health Team, Life Recovered, and Buckner International want to invite your church staff to the second annual DBA Refocus Retreat. It will be held on Thursday, January 23 from 8:30 am-4:00 pm at Camp Copass. Time will be spent on individual assessment and reflection. Group training on how to rest, self-evaluation and refreshing solutions will be provided by Jimmy Storrie and Jennifer Gonzalez of Life Recovered. Camp Copass will provide our lunch.
Let me encourage you to bring your staff. This would be an excellent Staff Development Day and a great way to start the year off right for you and your staff. I hope you will join us as together we will recharge, refresh and refocus.
