- ABOUT US
Each year author David Platt and Radical.net sponsor a six-hour broadcast called Secret Church providing Biblical study on a specific theme. The idea behind Secret Church comes from time David Platt spent teaching and ministering among underground Asian house-churches. Due to hostility from the government, the surrounding community, and even from their own family, many of these brothers and sisters in Christ around the world were forced to gather in secret, sometimes at the risk of their lives. With few opportunities to gather and little access to biblical teaching, they may meet for eight to twelve hours at a time simply to sing, pray, and study God’s Word. This God-centered focus is a helpful corrective to the desire for entertainment that characterizes many church gatherings in the U.S.
This event has continued for 20 consecutive years. The three goals of the meeting are:
I recently received the 187-page guide for this year’s topic: God, Government, and the Gospel. On Friday evening, April 24, my family will gather to frantically keep pace with 50,000 others on-line around the globe as David Platt delivers 64 comprehensive Biblical truths on the subject from the Old and New Testament. His fire-hydrant delivery in four of the six hours of this broadcast gives each of us plenty of material to go back and study throughout the year.
Several churches in Denton Baptist Association participate annually with Radical.net in Secret Church. Perhaps you would like to inquire if your church is participating this month or find a church that has signed up and join their study on-line. It’s not too late to order your study guide!
This year’s topic touches our citizenship. As the back cover of the study guide states: “Secret Church 20 will explore how the gospel transforms the way followers of Jesus relate to governing authorities in any nation for the glory of God in all nations. The purpose of this Secret Church is definitively not to advocate for a political position, party, or candidate in any country. The purpose of this Secret Church is to establish biblical foundations for understanding how the character of God and the content of the gospel totally transform the way Christians relate to government. Along the way, we will examine how these biblical foundations help Bible-believing Christians promote love and preserve unity even when we disagree on policies and politics. Ultimately, we will encourage one another to live faithfully as citizens of heaven while we’re citizens on earth.”
I’m looking forward to this study. I believe the time invested in it fits a situation like the pandemic we find ourselves in, since we believe that God can use it to remind us that He is good, He is sovereign, and, though we may feel isolated, He is always with us.
I hope it will be a help to each of us as we live out our faith this year.
