In a classroom in Bhutan, a young boy in second grade carried within his backpack the seeds of a transformative journey — gospel tracts that would irrevocably change his life and potentially the lives of those around him. When his classmates discovered the tracts, his courage ignited a fierce backlash; he faced the wrath of his teacher, endured physical punishment, and was suspended for a week.
In Bhutan, openly sharing the gospel is not merely discouraged; it can lead to arrest and persecution. Yet, despite these formidable challenges, this young boy remained resolute. His act illuminated the surrounding darkness, demonstrating that even the humblest expressions of faith can kindle hope in the bleakest circumstances.
Equally profound was his father’s journey. Embracing Christ as his Savior meant leaving behind the polytheistic traditions of Hinduism, a decision fraught with significant personal and social consequences. This choice resulted in ostracism, severed family ties, and exclusion from community gatherings. Their steadfast commitment to faith in an antagonistic society vividly illustrates the sacrifices believers often make in their pursuit of spiritual truth.
Yet their trials did not end there. As persecution surged, their family was compelled to flee Bhutan, seeking refuge in Nepal. In the refugee camp, amidst adversity, they discovered strength in their faith. They diligently continued to spread the gospel, establishing their first church — a resounding testament to their resilience, hope, and unwavering commitment to Christ. Their story stands as a potent reminder that even in the darkest hours, faith can be a guiding light, leading to new beginnings and a renewed sense of purpose.
This journey impresses upon us a crucial truth: retreating in the face of adversity is not an option. Instead, we must forge ahead, standing firm in our convictions and pressing through challenges with an indomitable spirit. Like the Bhutanese family, who consistently moved forward despite their trials, we can also transform adversity into opportunities for impact, spreading courage and conviction wherever we go.
This inspiring testimony has deeply resonated with me. I shared with Morgan how profoundly touched I was by the story of this Bhutanese church planter. It drives home the urgent reality that Christian persecution remains a significant challenge worldwide, yet it also highlights the imperative for us to remain steadfast in faith and prayer. We are called to support one another, uplift each other through trials, and boldly
continue sharing the gospel.
As Romans 8:31 reassures us, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” This powerful verse reminds us that divine support empowers us to confront any adversity. Additionally, 1 Timothy 2:1-2 urges us to make “petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving… for all people,” including those in authority, so that we may lead peaceful and godly lives. This emphasizes the profound strength found in community and
intercession.
I pray that we remember and lift our brothers and sisters in faith, especially those who are facing persecution around the globe. May their courage ignite a fire within us, inspiring us to be bold in our personal faith journeys. Just like the Bhutanese family, we too can make a profound difference wherever we are, shining the light of Christ into the hearts of those we encounter. With unwavering faith and a commitment to prayer, we can face adversity head-on, move forward with determination, and become instruments of God’s grace in a world that is in desperate need of it.
