Living Among Them: An Incarnational Devotional

Scripture:
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” — John 1:14
Reflection
Jesus did not save the world from a distance. He entered our world. He walked our
roads, sat at our tables, shared our joys, and carried our sorrows. The incarnation was
God’s greatest demonstration of love through presence.
Cross-cultural missionaries are called to follow that example.
Sometimes incarnational ministry looks like drinking tea for hours with a neighbor before
ever discussing spiritual matters. Sometimes it means attending a funeral, quietly
sharing grief with a family that does not yet know Christ. Other times it requires setting
aside our expertise and listening long enough to understand how God is already at work
among a people.
The temptation in ministry is to focus on accomplishing tasks. Yet people rarely care
how much we know until they know how much we care. Relationships open doors that
programs cannot. Presence creates opportunities for the gospel to be seen before it is
heard.
Jesus entered humanity as a servant. Likewise, we enter another culture not as experts
but as learners, friends, and witnesses. When we listen well, love deeply, and live
humbly among people, we reflect the character of Christ.
The goal of incarnational ministry is not merely to communicate truth. It is to embody the
love of Jesus in ways that can be seen, experienced, and understood within the lives of
those we serve.
Application
Ask yourself:
• Am I spending enough time with people simply to know and love them?
• Do I share in the joys and sorrows of those I serve?
• Am I willing to learn from others rather than always being the teacher?
• How can I demonstrate Christ’s presence before speaking Christ’s message?
Prayer
Father, thank You for sending Jesus to dwell among us. Help me follow His example by
living humbly among the people You have called me to serve. Teach me to listen before
speaking, to love before expecting results, and to serve before seeking influence. May
others see the presence of Christ in my life, and may my relationships open doors for
the gospel. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
