Last week, I was blessed with the opportunity to spend a week in the captivating United Kingdom. Our journey led us from the vibrant streets of London to the quaint coastal town of Plymouth, then to the spellbinding city of Edinburgh, the historical allure of Lincoln, and numerous charming towns in between. As we traversed, I was filled with a sense of adventure, eager to discover hidden gems and forge connections with the locals, immersing myself in their lives, perspectives, and, of course, their breakfast traditions!

The warmth and friendliness of the people we met were heartwarming. In a cozy restaurant in Plymouth, we encountered a woman named Penny, who approached our table with a smile and asked if we were the folks from Texas. We invited her to join us, and she enthusiastically accepted. Over a traditional English breakfast, Penny—who has been a regular at the restaurant for nearly 40 years—shared her story of moving to Plymouth long ago and her bittersweet connection to the town.

What truly struck me during our time with Penny and others was their genuine interest in us. Their questions underscored a shared human experience: How do we feel about the current U.S. election’s outcome? What are our thoughts on the economy and inflation? How do we view the border crisis? And, of course, are the BBQ ribs in Texas really as amazing as people say? These conversations fostered a sense of connection, reminding us that we’re all navigating similar challenges and share a mutual love for good food.

Reflecting on these insightful exchanges, I found myself reminded of Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” It struck me as a powerful reminder that, despite our differences, we all share a common humanity and an innate desire for connection.

This morning, I shared my first cup of coffee with Morgan, where I eagerly recounted the unforgettable moments of my trip. The warm hospitality of everyone we met left an indelible mark on me. Their kindness and genuine concern inspired me to carry forward their spirit of generosity—especially with Christmas just around the corner. It’s a timely reminder that a small act of kindness can brighten someone’s day and make a significant difference in their life.

As I reflect on all this and the upcoming Christmas season, my prayer is that we extend God’s love and kindness to everyone we encounter, regardless of their familiarity with the gospel. For many, the Christmas season is filled with joy, but for others, it can be a challenging time—some may have loved ones to celebrate with, while others may find themselves alone. Let’s embrace the spirit of the season and reach out to those who need it most, creating connections that enrich all of our lives.
