“Connecting All Peoples to the Gospel”
Morgan Malone
This month our association will gather at Camp Copass on October 29th from 6:30-8:00
pm to celebrate 140 years of existence for Denton Baptist Association. Our association has spanned three millenniums caring for the people of North Texas.
Our theme for our gathering will be “Connecting all peoples to the gospel.” In looking at our history, the association was created by Southern Baptist congregations in Denton County. Unfortunately, our association was not integrated.
It wasn’t until 1974 that the first African American Church Mt. Calvary joined our association. Mt. Calvary dates its origins to 1875 with Pleasant Grove running a close second in 1884. There are 15 African American Churches that are part of the association today. We also have one African church that is part of our association.
Due to the influx of Hispanics in this area our association started and accepted into the association First Mexican in 1979, Fe Un Ministerio and Iglesia Bautista Betania in 1998. Today we have 9 Hispanic churches that are a part. With close to 200,000 Hispanics who call North Texas home our association needs to start more churches.
In 1998 our first Korean churches came to be members of the association. Denton Korean joined the association in 1998 followed by Flower Mound Korean in 1999. Flower Mound Korean was a church plant started by Denton Baptist Associational Churches. Since that time 7 Korean churches have joined our association.
A third group who came here due to religious persecution in their country of Burma or Myanmar started a church in 2005. It was called Chin Evangelical Baptist Church. Since that time two other Myanmar congregations have joined our association.
Other groups that have migrated here are Chinese, Indian and Haitian. Our association has 1 Haitian, 3 Chinese, and 4 Indian congregations. The first Chinese congregation Denton Chinese was started in 1982. The first Indian congregation was started less than 6 years ago. The Haitian congregation called Valley of Grace was started in 2024.
Truly our association has been in process of “Connecting All Peoples to the Gospel.” Let me encourage you to come to our gathering on October 29 to celebrate what God has done and what He desires to do in the future. Click on the link to register for this special event.
